 FAQ

ELIGIBILITY

  • Ages 5-18 (based on how old the athlete is as of Sept 1st)

  • PAHAA athletes must be homeschooled (receiving his/her primary education through the home) or enrolled in a private school.

The player must be living at home with a parent or guardian.

A player is ineligible if that player has gone through any high school graduation ceremony prior to the season’s first game.

A player is ineligible for play on any team on the September 1st following that player’s 19th birthday.

Since we participate in the regional National Christian Homeschool Championship (NCHC) tournament each year (and sometimes national tournament for older teams), we must also adhere to their eligibility requirements. Click the button below for the NCHC guidelines.

TEAMS AND COACHES

  • Teams are formed at the beginning of the season (usually September) based on eligibility rules, age, and tryout results. Boys and girls teams will typically be formed by age considerations. Examples include 18 and under, 16 and under, 14 and under, 12 and under, 10 and under (we nickname these “18U”, “16U”, etc). Occasionally, an athlete might be requested to “play up” on an older team, but athletes will not be allowed to play down on a younger team.

  • A mixture of other homeschool organizations, Christian schools, and public schools.

  • All of our coaches are selected by our Athletic Director and Board of Directors and undergo a routine background check. Each of our coaches are strictly volunteers. Most of them are parents of athletes, but we do have coaches with no athletes playing who just love the kids and the game of basketball. Please contact us and let us know if you’d be interested in coaching one of our teams!

PRACTICES & GAMES

  • Practice schedules are usually set in August. Practices start in September and will continue through February. Our 10U, 12U, and 14U teams usually practice 1-2 days a week, and 16U and 18U teams usually practice 3 days a week. Once games start, the number of weekly practices will decrease depending on the game schedule for that week. Days of the week and time of day will depend on gym availability and the coaches’ schedules. Again, we strive to set practice schedules no later than August. We also try very hard not to hold practices or play games on Wednesday or Sunday.

  • 10U teams: Average about 1 game per week in January and February. There is also the possibility of attending the Big South regional tournament in Mansfield, but this will be determined after the teams are formed.

12U and 14U teams: Games will start in November and last through February. Approximately 1-2 games per week. Approximately 2-3 tournaments per season, including our own Paris HOOPS tournament and the Big South regional tournament in Mansfield.

16U and 18U teams: Games will start in November and last through February. Usually average 2 games per week. Approximately 3-4 tournaments per season, including our own Paris HOOPS tournament and the Big South regional tournament in Mansfield. Our 16U and 18U teams may also attend the national tournament in Springfield in mid March.

*Practices will decrease once games start

  • For years, we didn’t have a home gym and moved around from church gyms to school gyms – whatever gym we could get. But since 2019, PAHAA has been utilizing the Roxton ISD gyms for all home games and practices. Having a place to call home has been a huge blessing! The address is 202 Denton, Roxton, TX.

  • We try our best to schedule as many games as close to home as possible. But this can be challenging when you live in a rural community. We average about half of our games being played locally. When we do have to travel, we try our best to limit that to no more than 60 minutes away for younger teams, and no more than 90 minutes away for older teams. Exceptions to this would be the regional tournament in Mansfield (mid to late February), and the national tournament in Springfield (16U and 18U teams only at this time; mid March).

  • PAHAA is definitely a family-centered organization. The last thing we want to do is have a schedule that requires families to be split up all over the place. We also don’t want every night of the week to be consumed with sports. So we try very hard to keep this in mind when scheduling practices and games, especially for families with more than one child playing.

Practices: We try our very best to schedule practices so that families with kids on multiple teams practice on the same night. There are exceptions to this, depending on gym availability and coaches’ schedules.

Games: When we schedule games with another school or organization, we try and schedule as many games in one night as we can. This keeps all of our families in one place, and also frees up other nights of the week.

COST

  • Registration Fee: For 12U, 14U, 16U, and 18U, our annual fee (per sport) is $200 per athlete with $400 family max.

For 10U, our annual registration fee is $100 per athlete with $300 family max.

All registration fees must be paid by the registration deadline, September 15th.

*NEW!* We are offering our families the option of paying their registration fees via monthly payments instead of in one lump sum. Contact us for details.

Uniforms & Apparel: For 12U, 14U, 16U, and 18U teams, uniforms are provided by PAHAA (as well as shooting shirts for 18U teams). Warm-up pants, jackets, shoes, and any additional apparel is optional and is not paid for by PAHAA.

10U athletes will be required to supply their own pair of black shorts for games.

PAHAA does have t-shirts made every season, usually in October or November, with our logo and sponsors on the back. We highly encourage our families to purchase these and wear them throughout the season to show support of PAHAA and our sponsors. But this is an optional purchase.

Admission for Games: Most all schools and organizations that we will be playing will charge admission fees to watch the games. PAHAA also charges admission fees to all of our home games. PAHAA charges $5 for an adult, $4 for students and seniors, and $12 maximum per family. Most other organizations charge similarly. FREE GAME ADMISSIONS to all PAHAA home games are possible (as a fundraiser incentive – more info at our Kick-Off Meeting). To find out why we charge for admissions to home games, see the question “What does the money go toward?”

Travel expenses: Since we are a competitive sports organization, we will be traveling to some out of town games. (see the question “How far will we be traveling for away games?” for more details about this). Each family will need to budget for travel expenses, including lodging for the 3-day regional tournament in Mansfield in February, and the week-long national tournament in Springfield for 16U and 18U teams. PAHAA always gets a discounted group hotel rate for these trips that our families can choose to take advantage of.

Please Note: It costs much more to participate in most other homeschool athletics organizations. But it’s important to PAHAA that we keep our fees as low as possible for our families. The ONLY way this is possible is for us to require each family to participate in our fundraisers and for each family to commit to volunteering their time throughout the season.

  • The last thing anybody wants to be doing is fundraising! But since PAHAA is completely volunteer based, and fundraising is a necessity, we try to make it as easy and enjoyable as possible.

We have a couple of fundraisers that we do every year: SNAP, Sponsorships, Shoot-a-thon, and Fish Fry are some we have done over the years.

At the kickoff meeting the fundraising amount will be announced. The amount each player needs to raise changes from year to year, depending on how many families we have registered.

  • All registration fees, fundraisers, and money made from admissions and concessions at home games goes towards all of the following expenses that we incur throughout the season:

    Uniforms

    Equipment & supplies

    Gym maintenance fees

    Referee fees

    Tournament entry fees

    Liability insurance

    Summer camps

REQUIREMENTS

  • Registration: Each family must fill out our online registration form and pay the annual registration fee. Part of the online registration process includes each family agreeing to abide by our Code of Conduct and signing a liability waiver. It also requires each family to commit to volunteering and fundraising (see below).

Payment: Each family must have registration fees paid or a payment plan set up in order for your child to participate in practices and or games.

Volunteer Commitment: It’s CRUCIAL to our organization that each family volunteers. We are handling this a little differently this year, with the hopes of making things much easier!

Each family (not each individual person) will be required to volunteer a minimum number of hours in either admissions, concessions, books, clock, or a combination thereof.

We will utilize our online sign-up form again this year. We’ll send you the link and a deadline, and you’ll have the ability to pick which spots you want. If you have not signed up by the deadline, we’ll plug you in somewhere.

We will provide training for each job!

If you have a conflict, YOU are responsible for finding someone to switch with and updating the sign-up sheet.

New this year: You do have the option of paying a fee in lieu of volunteering. 10U families = $200. All other families = $300. PAHAA will then use this money to pay someone to work in your place.

In addition to the above required volunteering, just like any other nonprofit organization, there are always extra behind-the-scenes tasks that must be done in order for PAHAA to exist. Please let us know if you would be willing to go above and beyond and help us with any of the Team or Program-Wide volunteer jobs. Click the button below to find out more.
